Veggie Garden

I've planted Red Leaf lettuce, Romain, tomatoes. The strawberries are looking great! Last year I only got one strawberry!
On the left is Chinese Snow peas, the middle is Bush beans, and beyond that are cucumbers and then a cherry tomato plant. I put straw around the beds this year to try to keep the weeds down. I'm hoping it will work! I'm trying, Catherine!

I don't see thick 'books' of straw which really work to keep weeds down. It blocks sunlight which they need to burst forth in their own glory. But, perhaps, at least some straw will be helpful.

I did the thick books in the raspberry rows.

I didn't have enough to do books because the boys broke them all apart and sprinkled it. So it probably won't do much good this year. Next year I'll do the "book" thing.

You know what else works really good for weed control. Put down some newspaper (not glossy ads) and put grass clippings on top. It really worked in between my corn rows the last 2 years. :) It breaks down well and you don't get oats or wheat coming up from the straw the next year. :)
